Preparation
What happens before the colour goes on?
Protection and repairs come first, because every dent, crack and poorly stopped joint shows through new paint.
- Floors, furniture and adjoining areas are covered, and edges, switches and fittings are masked.
- Surfaces are cleaned where needed and loose material is removed.
- Holes, cracks and dents are filled and sanded, with sanding managed to limit dust.
- Stains and bare patches get the primer or sealer they need, not extra coats of finish paint.

What does interior painting cost in Auckland?
An interior repaint of a 3-bedroom Auckland home typically costs $8,000 to $15,000+. Your price is the written fixed quote for your rooms after a free site visit, and three things decide where it sits in that range:
- Scope: walls only costs less than walls, ceilings, doors and frames.
- Plaster repair: a few filled holes are quick; cracked joints or walls stripped of wallpaper take longer.
- Furniture: empty rooms are faster than rooms that have to be cleared, protected and put back.

Finishes
Which paint finish suits each room?
Low sheen suits most living rooms and bedrooms, while kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and busy hallways need a more washable, moisture-resistant finish. Ceilings are normally flat, and doors, frames and skirtings usually take a tougher semi-gloss or gloss.
The catch is light. The higher the sheen, the more it shows any unevenness in the wall, especially where windows or wall lights throw light across it. We balance durability against how much light each wall gets.
Renovations
Do renovation walls need plastering before painting?
Often, yes. Renovations mix new plasterboard with old walls, stripped wallpaper and patch repairs, and strong side light shows every change between them.
New plasterboard needs GIB stopping before it can be painted, usually to a Level 4 finish. Where the joints would still show, for example on a large wall lit from the side, a Level 5 skim coat gives a uniform surface. Living at home
Can you stay home while the interior is painted?
Usually, yes. We agree a room-by-room order that keeps essential rooms usable where possible, with agreed access times, ventilation and drying time.
Before we start, remove small valuables, wall hangings and anything fragile. We handle masking, floor and furniture protection, and a tidy of the work area at the end of each day. Colour and products
How do you choose interior colours and paint?
Choose colours on the wall, not from the card, because daylight changes through the day and a small card rarely looks the same across a large wall.
Try large samples on more than one wall and look at them morning and evening. We use Resene, Dulux and Wattyl paint systems, and your written quote records the products and coats for each surface, so you know exactly what is included.

What does a good interior paint job look like?
Joints disappear, the sheen is even, edges are crisp, and patch repairs do not show under raking afternoon light or LED downlights. That result comes mostly from preparation.
Which rooms and surfaces do you paint?
Living areas, bedrooms, hallways, stairwells and home offices, plus kitchens, bathrooms and laundries with suitable systems. That includes ceilings, doors, frames and skirtings. High-traffic areas get tougher, more washable finishes.
Do I need Level 5 plaster before painting?
Not always. Level 5 is worth it where strong side light, large walls, dark colours or higher sheens would show a Level 4 finish. We recommend it only when it will visibly improve the result. See Level 5 plastering.
Can you paint over mould or water stains?
Not directly. Mould is cleaned and treated first, and water stains are sealed with a stain-blocking primer once the leak or moisture source has been fixed. Otherwise they come back through the new paint.
Can you remove wallpaper and repair the walls?
Yes. We strip the paper, clean off the old adhesive and repair the plaster underneath, with a skim coat where the wall needs it, before painting. See wallpaper removal and wall repair.
How long does interior painting take?
A few rooms may take days; a full home can take one to two weeks, depending on preparation and drying. Auckland humidity can slow drying, which we allow for in the programme.
